Overview
The ultimate experience kicks-off early at Forodhani, a street which has more captivating and overwhelming vibe during evenings, especially for seafood lovers. It history commemorates Sultan Khalifa’s silver jubilee in 1936 and thus become the Stone Town’s main attraction. Next to Forodhani is the Old Fort – Stone Town’s oldest structure, dating from the late 1600s to the early 1701. History has it that the founder of this ancient building was Sultan Seyyid Said’s grandfather. Learn more from your tour guide as you proceed to the next stop – the House of Wonders.
Termed Beit el Ajaib, the House of Wonder is the most fascinating building in Stone Town that never fails to impress. Sultan Barghash erected it in 1883 as a ceremonial palace and it was the first on the island to have electric light and an electric elevator. It is still one of Zanzibar’s largest buildings, now hosting the National Museum of History and Culture.
Proceed to the Old customs House, another famous landmark where Sultan Hamoud was proclaimed Sultan in 1896. The building has a solid timber door that worth taking notice of. The door’s design was thought to express the status and riches of the people who lived behind it; the more decorated, the wealthier the person who resided in the building.
Take a 30 – 45-minute break for lunch in afternoon before proceeding to the following destinations;
- Stone Town Cultural Center: Also known as the Old Dispensary
- Darajani Market: Date as far 1904, it is the oldest local market in Zanzibar
- Anglican Cathedral Church: Marks the abolition of slavery in the Island
- Beit el Amani Memorial Museum: Houses artifacts of the 19th century
- Tippu Tip’s House: House of a slave trader
