Serengeti National Park

Welcome To Serengeti

Serengeti National Park is one of the most famous wildlife reserves in the world, renowned for its breathtaking landscapes and incredible biodiversity. Covering an expansive area of 14,750 square kilometres, the Serengeti is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a key component of Tanzania’s northern safari circuit.

The park is perhaps best known for the Great Migration, a natural spectacle where over 1.5 million wildebeests, along with hundreds of thousands of zebras and gazelles, traverse the plains in search of fresh grazing. The Serengeti embodies the quintessential African safari, offering unparalleled opportunities to witness wildlife in its most raw and natural state.

All About Serengeti

Serengeti National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and an essential destination for wildlife enthusiasts and those seeking an authentic African safari experience. The best time to visit is during the dry season, from late June to October, when the wildlife is most concentrated around water sources.

Serengeti National Park is located in northern Tanzania, bordering Kenya to the north where it connects with the Maasai Mara National Reserve. The park is accessible by road or air, with most visitors starting their journey from Arusha, the safari capital of Tanzania. By road, it takes about 7 to 8 hours to reach the Serengeti, passing through the Ngorongoro Conservation Area.

Alternatively, visitors can opt for a short flight from Arusha or other regional airports to one of the park’s airstrips, such as Seronera or Kogatende, which provide convenient access to different parts of the park. The park’s vast size and variety of access points allow for diverse safari experiences.

The Serengeti is home to one of the most diverse ecosystems in Africa, supporting an astonishing array of wildlife. The park hosts the “Big Five”—lions, elephants, buffaloes, leopards, and rhinos—along with cheetahs, giraffes, hippos, crocodiles, and numerous species of antelope.

However, it is the Great Migration that truly sets the Serengeti apart, as millions of wildebeests, zebras, and gazelles embark on an epic journey across the plains, followed closely by predators such as lions, hyenas, and crocodiles. Birdlife is equally impressive, with over 500 species recorded, including ostriches, eagles, vultures, and flamingos.

The Serengeti’s landscapes are as varied as its wildlife, ranging from endless grass plains to woodlands, riverine forests, and granite kopjes. The Seronera Valley, located in the heart of the park, is known for its year-round wildlife viewing, particularly for big cats like lions and leopards. The Western Corridor, stretching to Lake Victoria, is famous for the dramatic Grumeti River crossings during the migration, where crocodiles lie in wait for their prey.

The northern region, bordering Kenya, offers a more remote and exclusive safari experience, especially during the migration’s river crossings at the Mara River. The park’s kopjes, including Simba Kopje and Moru Kopje, are iconic landmarks that provide stunning viewpoints and shelter for predators.

The Serengeti can be visited year-round, but the timing of the Great Migration plays a significant role in determining the best time to visit. The dry season, from June to October, is ideal for viewing the migration as the herds move northward and for witnessing river crossings at the Grumeti and Mara rivers.

The wet season, from November to May, brings lush green landscapes and calving season for wildebeests, making it a great time for photography and observing newborn animals. However, some areas may be more challenging to access during the wettest months of April and May.

Finally, Serengeti National Park offers a once-in-a-lifetime safari experience, with its breathtaking landscapes and abundant wildlife captivating visitors from around the world.
