Mikumi National Park

Welcome To Mikumi

Mikumi National Park is one of Tanzania’s most accessible and popular wildlife destinations, offering an authentic safari experience with a rich diversity of flora and fauna. Covering an area of 3,230 square kilometres, Mikumi is the fourth-largest national park in Tanzania and serves as a gateway to the vast wilderness of the southern safari circuit. Often compared to the Serengeti due to its open plains, Mikumi is a less crowded alternative, providing excellent wildlife viewing opportunities, especially for those seeking a tranquil and immersive experience.

All About Mikumi

Mikumi National Park’s location along the Dar es Salaam–Iringa highway makes it a convenient destination for both short visits and longer safaris, often combined with trips to the nearby Udzungwa Mountains or Ruaha National Park.Mikumi is also a great place for birdwatching, with over 400 species recorded.

Mikumi National Park is located in southern Tanzania, about 283 kilometres west of Dar es Salaam, making it one of the closest national parks to the country’s largest city. The park is easily accessible by road, with a drive from Dar es Salaam taking approximately 4 to 5 hours. For those preferring air travel, there are regular flights from Dar es Salaam to the Mikumi airstrip, which is conveniently located near the park’s main entrance. Its strategic location along the A7 highway also makes Mikumi a popular stop for travellers en route to other southern parks, such as Ruaha and the Udzungwa Mountains.
Mikumi National Park is renowned for its abundant wildlife, including four of the Big Five—lions, elephants, buffaloes, and leopards. The park’s open plains, reminiscent of the Serengeti, are ideal for spotting large herds of herbivores such as zebras, wildebeests, and impalas. Mikumi is also home to one of the largest populations of giraffes in Tanzania, as well as hippos, crocodiles, and numerous species of antelope. Birdwatchers will find Mikumi a paradise, with over 400 bird species recorded, including the lilac-breasted roller, bateleur eagle, and the endemic yellow-throated longclaw. The park’s diverse habitats, from savannahs to woodlands and wetlands, support this rich biodiversity.
The Mkata Floodplain, often referred to as “Little Serengeti,” is the most prominent feature of Mikumi National Park and is the best place to observe wildlife. The floodplain is a vast area of grassland that attracts a variety of animals, particularly during the dry season when water sources elsewhere become scarce. The park’s hippo pools offer visitors the chance to observe these massive animals up close, often in the company of crocodiles and a variety of waterbirds. The surrounding hills and mountains, including the Uluguru and Udzungwa ranges, provide a stunning backdrop to the park’s landscapes and offer opportunities for scenic hikes.
Mikumi National Park can be visited year-round, but the dry season, from June to October, is the best time for wildlife viewing, as animals are more concentrated around water sources and the vegetation is less dense. During the wet season, from November to May, the park becomes lush and green, and although wildlife may be more dispersed, the scenery is spectacular, and birdwatching is at its best with the arrival of migratory species. Mikumi National Park offers a rich blend of wildlife experiences, stunning landscapes, and diverse activities, making it an ideal destination for nature lovers and adventure seekers in Tanzania.
