All About Selous
The Selous is home to a wide variety of wildlife, including large populations of elephants, lions, leopards, giraffes, and African wild dogs, one of the reserve’s most iconic species. The Rufiji River, which flows through the reserve, is a lifeline for the area’s wildlife and supports large populations of hippos and crocodiles. The reserve is also a haven for birdwatchers, with over 440 species recorded.
Selous Game Reserve is located in southern Tanzania, about 230 kilometres southwest of Dar es Salaam. The reserve is accessible by both road and air. By road, the journey from Dar es Salaam takes approximately 6 to 8 hours, depending on the route and road conditions.
For a quicker option, there are daily flights from Dar es Salaam, Zanzibar, and other major Tanzanian cities to the reserve’s airstrips, such as Mtemere or Kiba. The flight takes about 45 minutes, offering stunning aerial views of the reserve’s vast landscapes. Once inside Selous, visitors can explore the reserve via 4×4 safari vehicles, boats, or even on foot with guided walking safaris.
Selous Game Reserve is home to an incredible diversity of wildlife, including some of the largest populations of elephants, hippos, and crocodiles in Africa. The reserve is also a stronghold for endangered species such as African wild dogs and black rhinos. Predators like lions, leopards, and hyenas are common, and the reserve’s large herds of buffalo, giraffes, and antelopes are a sight to behold.
Selous is also a birdwatcher’s paradise, with over 440 bird species recorded, including the African fish eagle, kingfishers, and colourful bee-eaters. The reserve’s diverse habitats, ranging from dense woodlands to open savannahs, wetlands, and river systems, support this rich biodiversity.
The Rufiji River, which runs through the heart of Selous, is one of the reserve’s most prominent features. It is the largest river in Tanzania and provides a vital water source for the wildlife, especially during the dry season. Boat safaris along the Rufiji River offer unique opportunities to observe animals such as hippos and crocodiles up close, as well as a variety of birdlife. The reserve is also famous for its Stiegler’s Gorge, a 100-meter deep canyon that cuts through the landscape and offers stunning views. Walking safaris in Selous are a highlight, allowing visitors to experience the bush up close and gain insights into the reserve’s flora and fauna.
The Best Time to Visit Selous Game Reserve is during the dry season, from June to October, when wildlife congregates around the rivers and waterholes, making for excellent game viewing. The dry conditions also make the roads more accessible.
The wet season, from November to May, transforms the reserve into a lush, green landscape, with abundant birdlife and fewer tourists.
