Lake Manyara National Park offers a mix of habitats, from groundwater forests and acacia woodlands to open savannas and marshlands. This variety supports a wide range of animals and makes it an excellent destination for game drives, canoeing on the lake (seasonal), and birdwatching.
Lake Manyara National Park is located in northern Tanzania, nestled between the Great Rift Valley escarpment and the shallow, soda-rich Lake Manyara. The park is easily accessible from Arusha, the main gateway to the northern safari circuit, with a drive of about 1.5 hours (approximately 120 kilometers).
It is also conveniently situated en route to other iconic Tanzanian destinations, such as the Serengeti National Park and the Ngorongoro Crater, making it a popular stop on many safari itineraries. The park can also be reached via air, with regular flights from Arusha to the nearby Lake Manyara airstrip.
Lake Manyara National Park boasts a rich diversity of wildlife despite its relatively small size. The park is renowned for its population of tree-climbing lions, a rare behaviour that is not commonly seen in other parts of Africa. Elephants are another major attraction, often seen roaming through the park’s forests and open plains.
Other large mammals include buffaloes, zebras, giraffes, hippos, and various antelope species. The park is also a haven for birdwatchers, with over 400 species recorded. Lake Manyara itself attracts vast flocks of flamingos, as well as pelicans, storks, herons, and other waterfowl.
The landscapes of Lake Manyara National Park are incredibly varied, offering a stunning backdrop to the wildlife experience. The alkaline Lake Manyara, which covers about two-thirds of the park’s surface area, is a highlight, especially during the wet season when it becomes a haven for flamingos and other waterbirds.
The Great Rift Valley escarpment, rising dramatically from the lake’s shores, provides breathtaking views and a dramatic setting. The park’s groundwater forests are lush and green, offering a cool, shady refuge for both animals and visitors. Other attractions include the hot springs, known as Maji Moto, which bubble up from the ground near the lake’s edge.
Lake Manyara National Park can be visited year-round, but the dry season from June to October is the best time for wildlife viewing as animals concentrate around the lake and other water sources. The wet season, from November to May, brings lush green vegetation, abundant birdlife, and the arrival of migratory species.
