Arusha National Park, located in northern Tanzania near the city of Arusha, is a gem known for its diverse landscapes and abundant wildlife. Though smaller than other Tanzanian parks, it offers a wide range of environments, from lush forests to savannas and the picturesque Momella Lakes.
Arusha National Park is located in northern Tanzania, just 25 kilometres northeast of Arusha town, making it one of the most accessible national parks in the country. The park lies at the foothills of Mount Meru, Tanzania’s second-highest peak, which dominates the landscape.
Visitors can easily reach the park by road, with the drive from Arusha town taking about 40 minutes. The park is also conveniently located near Kilimanjaro International Airport, making it an ideal starting or ending point for a Tanzania Safari.
Despite its small size, Arusha National Park is home to an impressive variety of wildlife. The park is particularly known for its population of giraffes, which are among the highest density in Africa. Visitors can also encounter elephants, buffaloes, zebras, warthogs, and several species of primates, including the black-and-white colobus monkey.
Although large predators like lions and leopards are rare, the park’s diverse habitats support a rich array of birdlife, with over 400 bird species recorded. Flamingos are a seasonal highlight on the Momella Lakes, while forested areas offer sightings of turacos and trogons.
Arusha National Park’s landscapes are diverse and picturesque. The park’s centerpiece is Mount Meru, whose forested slopes and summit provide stunning views of Mount Kilimanjaro on clear days. The Ngurdoto Crater, often called the “Little Ngorongoro,” is a volcanic caldera with lush vegetation and is home to buffaloes, warthogs, and monkeys.
The Momella Lakes, a series of shallow alkaline lakes, are famous for their seasonal flamingo populations and offer excellent opportunities for canoeing and bird watching. Additionally, the park’s dense montane forests are home to waterfalls like the Tululusia Falls, providing beautiful hiking routes.

Arusha National Park can be visited year-round, but the dry season from June to October is the best time for wildlife viewing as animals are easier to spot in the sparse vegetation.
The wet season, from November to May, brings lush landscapes and vibrant birdlife, especially migratory species. However, roads and trails can be muddy and challenging during this time, making some areas less accessible.
